Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - A Timeless Classic
The story of how Gladys Aylward went from parlour maid to heroic missionary in 1940s China is well known, but the film bears watching time and again. There are outstanding performances by Robert Donat as the Mandarin - seriously ill, this was his last film - and of course the wonderful Ingrid Bergman, ably supported by Curt Jurgens as the army colonel. Other fine assets are the script by Alan Burgess, who wrote the original book, "The Small Woman", Freddie Young's sweeping cinematography (you would ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - following God's call
This is a magnificent film in every aspect; the acting is brilliant, the landscapes beautiful, the drama intense. Based on the true story of Gladys Aylward, a house maid in England who was "not qualified" to be sent to China as a missionary, so went there on her own, saving every shilling earned for a ticket on the Trans-Siberian railroad. i was actually named after Ingrid Bergman in this film... my mum watched it when it first came out. It is an inspiring film, i have watched it many times and will keep watching it. I recommend this film, "this old man, he played one..." all the way to tsian... Gladys Aylward must have been a tremendous woman!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - good old film
This is a very good old film. Almost as good as "It's a Wonderful Life". 5 stars. *****

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Must be seen
I first saw this film one Christmas when I was about 10 years old and it has remained in my memory ever since. I have never seen a film that takes you through such emotions and i would recommend that it is watched with a loved one, a box of chocolates and a large box of tissues. I can not listen to the song "nick nack paddy wack give a dog a bone" without crying and I don't think you will either.
